One of the longest performing arts groups in the area is Houston Choral Showcase, a volunteer adult show choir singing choral arrangements of popular music such as pop, jazz, swing, gospel, and Broadway. Founded in 1932, this year marks their 80th anniversary and auditions will occur this month for new male and female singers to join the group at this special time.
Try-outs for Houston Choral Showcase start at 6:30pm on August 20 and 27 prior to the regular rehearsal time of 7:00-9:30pm, and a prepared audition piece is not required. Rehearsals are at Zion Lutheran Church, 3606 Beauchamp Street, Houston, TX 77009. Visit the web site at http://www.houstonchoralshowcase.org or call 281-346-0161 for complete audition information.
Houston Choral Showcase was originally formed as a program with the Houston Parks Department (called the Houston Community Chorus at that time). In the 1980s the choir became an independent non-profit organization and took the name Greater Houston Chorus. To reflect the group's identity as a show choir, the name was changed in 1997 to Houston Choral Showcase. Diane Benson has been the Music Director for 26 years. Celebrations this year include an 80th Anniversary Celebration & Auction at Saint Arnold Brewing Company on September 15, and will culminate in the annual Holiday Show at Christ Evangelical Presbyterian Church on December 16.
