Synopsis:	The Philanthropist, an English drawing-room comedy, depicts a 24-hour period in the life of Philip, a nerdy but sweet lecturer at Oxford University. Philip’s hobby is creating devilishly clever anagrams. He and his much younger fiancée, Celia, host a dinner party for six in Philip’s rooms. The six guests pair off throughout the evening. When Araminta makes a pass at Philip, he is too inept to fend her off, but equally inept at pleasing her. The next morning, the group must deal with the consequences of the previous night’s activities. Philip’s ineffective kindness actually results in cruelty, demonstrating his friend Donald’s theory that we all either live a lie or believe in something that is in fact a lie. The Philanthropist is Christopher Hampton’s rethinking of Moliere’s The Misanthrope.
