| Synopsis: |
Near New York in the 1800s, when electricity was being used for the first time, Dr. Givings has bought a vibrator. The purpose of the vibratory is to induce a “paroxysm,” which is his word for an orgasm, in order to cure hysteria. Mr. Daldry brings in his wife, Sabrina Daldry, and asks the doctor to cure her of her hysteria. Dr. Givings uses the vibrator, and she is suddenly better. Dr. Givings’ wife, Catherine, is suffering from loneliness, brought on by the fact that he refuses to allow her to breast feed their child, because her milk is deficient. He hires Sabrina’s housekeeper, Elizabeth, and she feels that she is being denied the right to her own child. She and Sabrina end up meeting in the vibrator room and proceed to administer their own treatments themselves. |
