| Synopsis: |
A wealthy man, Mr. Hardcastle, wants his daughter Kate to marry Charles Marlow, the son of an aristocrat, and he arranges for them to meet. However, Charles is uncomfortable around women of high station and oddly comfortable around women of low station. Thus, Kate decides to act as a barmaid in order to woo Charles. On the way to the Hardcastles’ manor, Charles and his friend George Hastings are tricked by Tom Lumpkins, the son Mrs. Hardcastle, into believing that the manor is simply an inn, thus leading to confusion and consternation with Mr. Hardcastles. Also, Hastings is in love with Constance Neville, a woman staying with the Hardcastles. However, Mrs. Hardcastle wants Constance to marry Tom so that they may keep a hold of Constance’s jewels. Ultimately, Charles falls in love with Kate, and Tom, discovering that he is now an adult, refuses to marry Constance so that she may be with Hastings. |
