La Clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus)
| Synopsis: |
Bitter that the Emperor of Rome, Titus, does not return her love, Vitellia, the daughter of the former emperor, Vitellius, engages in a plot to assassinate Titus. She convinces her suitor, Sextus, to run the evil plot. Meanwhile, the benevolent Tito is popular amongst his people. Nevertheless, Sextus sets fire to the Capital building. Luckily, Tito escapes harm. Sextus admits his crime to the emperor, but the kindly emperor has trouble deciding the appropriate punishment. Further, ignorant that Vitellia was responsible for the plot, Titus decides that she is the one he wants to marry. After discovering that Sextus will die in the arena, Vitellia admits her guilt in the plot. Valuing their honesty and willingness to repent, Titus pardons both Sextus and Vitellia. |
