La Canterina is a story of a beautiful, young singer (Gasparina) and her mother (Apollonia) making their way in the world by manipulation and taking advantage of men. Gasparina’s singing teacher (Don Pelagio) tries to gain her love with gifts and free housing. While Gasparina has no interest in him besides his teaching, she enjoys having a sugar daddy. Meanwhile, she is also wooed by the son of a wealthy merchant, Don Ettore. Don Pelagio is initially furious that Gasparina is fooling around with another suitor. But through cunning and manipulations, she manages to have both men eating out of her hand. Note: The role of Apollonia is usually sung by a baritone in female drag while the role of Don Ettore is usually sung by a mezzo-soprano in male drag. |
