MONTREAL -- The race for the final canoe-kayak spot on the Canadian Olympic team has been narrowed down to two after Mark de Jonge won the nine-boat final of the mens K-1 200-metre race Saturday. The Halifax paddler finished in a time of 35.89 seconds. Richard Dober Jr. of Trois Rivieres, Que., was second at 36.73 seconds. De Jonge and Dober will race each other to finalize the Olympic spot on Sunday morning. De Jonge can confirm his trip to London by winning the first race, while Dober will need to win two race-offs to take the spot. Quebec Citys Etienne Morneau was third on Saturday, while Ottawas Rhys Hill was fourth. Jason McCoombs of Dartmouth, N.S., proved himself as the fastest canoer at the second set of Canadian team trials in the senior mens C-1 200 metres. McCoombs has already been selected to the Canadian Olympic team and chose to race the trials to work on his race plan and to keep pace with his competition overseas competing at the European championships this weekend. "I saw some pretty quick times at Europeans this weekend, so the bar has been raised obviously, and Ill just do my best to be in that race," said McCoombs. "I was really focusing on the second half of my race and trying to pull together a nice finish and I think it went pretty well even in the pretty strong headwind." McCoombs clocked 41.88 seconds in the headwind to win with a lead of just over half a second. Gabriel Beauchesne-Sevigny of Trois Rivieres, who was second with a time of 42.44 seconds. Ottawas Ben Tardoli was third, while Aaron Rublee of Kamloops, B.C., was forth. Jillian DAlessio continued a successful streak for Nova Scotia athletes by winning the senior womens K-1 500 metres. DAlessio, of Middle Sackville, won in a time of two minutes 07.67 seconds. Dartmouths Hannah Vaughan was second at 2:03.38 and Una Lounder, also of Dartmouth, posted a 2:04.87 to take third. With the trials results weighing heavily on national team selection for carding points, DAlessio says the win is a boost for her confidence as she works to make her way back onto the team. "Coming out and being able to put together one of my best races, really it just proved a lot to myself and what Im capable of doing. Hopefully theres potential for more," she said. ... te-Jersey/ . He is 1-3 on the year with a 4.38 ERA. The 29-year-old left-hander has faced the Pirates four times (three starts) and is 2-0 with a 4.26 ERA. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, will counter with right-hander Jeff Karstens, who is 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA. Karstens didnt get a decision in his last start on Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as he allowed a run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of his teams 4-1 win. Just knowing that I didnt have my best stuff early in my game, I fought through a lot of pitches, Karstens said. I knew my job was to try and get as deep as I could. I knew we would fight back. Karstens is 0-3 lifetime against the Brewers and has pitched to a 4.08 ERA in nine games (six starts) against them. The Brewers continued their recent dominance of the Pirates on Friday, as Ryan Braun had three RBI to lead Milwaukee to a 5-2 victory.dddddddddddd The Brewers have now won seven straight and 12 of their last 14 games over the Bucs. Milwaukee has also won 31 of its last 34 home games in this series. Yovani Gallardo (4-2) earned the win in six innings where he allowed two runs on five hits and three walks. He also struck out five and added an RBI to give the Brewers their fourth win in six games overall. James McDonald (2-3) took the loss in just four innings of work for Pittsburgh. He allowed five runs on six hits and three walks while fanning seven in the Pirates third straight loss. I lost command and fell behind the hitters. If you do that it makes it easy for them, said McDonald about his performance. This game also featured a benches-clearing incident in the third inning when Pirates shortstop Ronnie Cedeno and Milwaukees Rickie Weeks became involved following a run-down. Nothing physical occurred, though. I dont know if it gave us an extra spark, but when those things happen you can get a team going and fired up, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said about the incident.
