TORONTO -- Landon Ferraro scored the overtime winner as the Grand Rapids Griffins derailed the Toronto Marlies bid for a franchise-record seventh consecutive victory with a 4-3 decision in American Hockey League action on Tuesday. Ferraro scored 4:11 into the extra frame, whacking a rebound past Marlies goalie Mark Owuya during a goalmouth scramble. "It was one of those nights where it wasnt quite happening for us," said Marlies coach Dallas Eakins, "but the guys didnt fold up, they kept fighting and thats good to see." Toronto battled back from three one-goal deficits of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 to force overtime, but couldnt get the go-ahead goal. Brendan Smith, Brent Raedeke and Tomas Tatar also tallied for Grand Rapids as the Griffins snapped a two-game losing skid to improve to 8-11-1 on the season. Gustav Nyquist chipped in with two assists for the Griffins. "It was a tough first period, but we stuck with it," said Marlies winger Jerry DAmigo. "Things didnt work out in the end, but we gave it a good effort in the second and third periods. "Were really pushing, trying to get to the top of the conference." Nazem Kadri, with two goals, and Ryan Hamilton replied for Toronto (12-5-4), which remains in first place in the North Division. Kelsey Wilson collected two assists. "After a slow start in the first, it was a pretty solid effort for us," said Kadri, who has racked up six goals and 10 points during a five-game scoring streak. "At the end of the day, weve got to cut down on those turnovers." Grand Rapids netminder Tom McCollum made 37 saves for the win while Toronto goalie Mark Owuya blocked 35 shots in a losing effort. "Owuya played a great game, he made some big saves for us," Hamilton said. "He gave us some energy when we needed it and kept us in the game." The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and Grand Rapids led 3-2 through 40 minutes. Smith opened the scoring with a power-play marker at 8:14 of the first period when he blasted a high slapshot from the top of the right faceoff circle that sailed over Owuyas shoulder. Kadri tied it up for Toronto when he froze a Griffins defenceman with a quick deke at the blue-line and snapped a wrist shot past McCollums glove at 18:15. Raedeke made it 2-1 for the Griffins when he broke in all alone on Owuya and beat the Marlies goalie with a blocker-side wrist shot at 7:36 of the second period. Kadri tied it up again with his second goal of the game at 16:25 when he somehow deposited the puck past McCollum while on his backside in front of the Griffins crease. Tatar replied for Grand Rapids less than two minutes later, racing down the left wing and wiring a wrist shot past Owuyas blocker at 18:23. Hamilton knotted the game at 3-3 when he scored on the power play 2:25 into the third period. From behind the net, the Marlies captain banked a rebound off of McCollum and into the Griffins cage. Toronto went 1-for-6 on the power play while Grand Rapids was 1-for-5. CARSON, Calif. -- Landon Donovan and David Beckham scored goals and Los Angeles beat the Portland Timbers 3-1 on Saturday night, snapping the Galaxys two-game losing skid. "Its a big one because the run weve been on and the way weve been playing," said Beckham, who re-signed with the Galaxy during the off-season. "Our performance was 100 per cent better than weve been playing all season." Juninho scored the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute for the defending champion Galaxy, who struggled in the seasons early going. "It was a game we needed to win," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. "Its not perfect, but was certainly improved from our previous MLS games this season." Kris Boyd scored goal for Portland, which lost its fourth straight. The past three have all come on goals in the final 10 minutes. "Its an issue we need to address and we need to address it quickly," Boyd said. Juninho broke a deadlock when he won a loose ball outside the box. The Brazilian unleashed a strike from 23 yards out that never got more than a few inches off the ground and nestled into the left corner of the net. Beckham followed it with his first goal of the season, nearly losing a pass, but running back onto the ball and firing from long range. Once it went in, he went sliding into the corner arrea to celebrate.dddddddddddd. It capped a strong performance from the English star, who returned after missing a game due to back spasms. "I havent done that for years," Beckham said.. "It was a terrible first touch but it put me in a good position." The Galaxys defence has been a work in progress since losing reigning MLS defender of the year Omar Gonzalez to a torn ACL. Saturday presented another challenge as Tommy Meyer, a rookie, and David Junior Lopes, acquired Tuesday from Chivas USA, started alongside one another. A turnover led to a quick pass from Eric Alexander to Boyd as he was retreating away from the goal box. The linesman kept his flag down, allowing Boyd to dribble in uncontested and finish a low shot. Arena was left looking befuddled on the sideline at the lack of a whistle. Donovan levelled the score 1-1 moments before halftime. A long pass from Todd Dunivant was settled by Robbie Keane. The Irishman dribbled near the goal line and spotted his teammate alone near the top of the box. Keanes pass was gently deflected but not enough to bother Donovan, who scored his first with a hard strike. Two goals later and the Galaxy finally had a win to build upon. "We havent been a good team in the early going," Arena said. "Tonight, we were a good team." ' ' '
