AUDITIONS for RENT School Edition

Auditions for Youth Ages 13 to 20 for Rent School Edition

Announcing auditions for the 1994 groundbreaking musical RENT SCHOOL EDITION. Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT SCHOOL EDITION is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award® for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. This adaptation has been carefully done, working to retain the dramatic intent of the revolutionary rock musical. Changes to language, gestures and the removal of one song ("Contact") make it possible for young actors to perform this piece.

The audition calls for all ethnicities, male and female, ages 13 to 20.

OPEN AUDITIONS are at the Congregational United Church in St. Charles

Monday, November 14 or Wednesday, November 16 from 6-8pm.

Actors and singers are asked to be familiar with the show prior to the audition.
Bring an 8 x 10 headshot attached to a proper actor's resume.

Actors/singers should prepare and memorize a 1-minute monologue in the style of the show which portrays the character you are most interested in playing. Do not use a monologue from the show. Also prepare and memorize 32 bars of a song from a similar style show. Bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. Do not bring CDs or sing a song from the show. Singing a cappella is not recommended. A freestyle modern dance audition will be required.

CALLBACKS are Sunday, November 20 from 11am-2pm. Actors needed for callback will be emailed. Actors may be cast without a callback. Call back music is below.

We want the best possible cast, and that means being creative with the audition process.

Although we would rather meet you in person, we will accept video auditions on YouTube for those of you who are out of town.

We can also Skype auditions November 14 or 16 after 8 pm. Email to schedule a time.

If you are unable to attend in person, please try to be available via Skype on Sunday, November 20th between 11 am and 2 pm for callbacks.

Rehearsals begin November 28: Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-9 pm; Sundays from 4:30-8:30 pm.

We are willing to be flexible based on actor availability, and can make accommodations for college students.

Tech/dress rehearsals January 9, 11 and 12 from 6-9 pm.

Rent School Edition will be presented at the Congregational United Church of Christ in St. Charles on January 13 and 14 at 7pm, and January 15 at 3 pm. Admission is free.

Director Tracy Whiteside has been directing and teaching theater since 2001, and has directed over 50 shows with cast ages ranging from 6 to 20. "I am so excited to be directing such a powerful show. Rent is a tool for social change, and is evidence of the power and potential of the ordinary person. It teaches tolerance and understanding," says Tracy.

Music director is Denise Beiermann of Beiermann School of Music.

RENT SCHOOL EDITION is a tuition-based educational theater and music experience. There is a $195 tuition fee plus due prior to the first rehearsal. Tuition is not refundable for any reason. Cast members will need to supply their own costume, props, makeup and miscellaneous items such as shoes, socks, etc. Due to the high cost of producing this show, scholarships are not available.
