CALGARY -- Cliff Smiths second goal of the night with 2. Reggie White Jersey .5 seconds remaining was the game winner as the Colorado Mammoth escaped with a 8-7 win over the Calgary Roughnecks in National Lacrosse League action Saturday night. Shortly after Colorado called a time-out to set up a play for its final possession, Smith broke to the net and bounced a shot through the legs of goaltender Mike Poulin. The decisive goal came on Colorados 33rd shot of the night. Calgary racked up 64 but struggled solving Mammoth goaltender Chris Levis, who was spectacular, especially in the games early going. Jamie Shewchuk also scored twice for Colorado (1-1), which also got goals from Ilija Galic, John Gallant, Mike McLellan and John Grant. The Mammoth dropped their season opener in another tight one last Saturday, losing 11-10 in overtime to Washington. Scott Ranger scored twice to lead the way for Calgary (2-1). Geoff Snider, Curtis Dickson, Dane Dobbie, Jeff Shattler and Cory Conway also scored. The Roughnecks lost their first game after opening the NLL season with back-to-back wins last weekend. Trailing the entire night, Calgary finally got the game back to even at 4:59 of the fourth quarter tying the score 7:07 on Sniders gritty individual effort. As he ran down the wing, Snider fended off the tight checking of Smith then leapt high in the air and tucked a shot over the shoulder of goalie Chris Levis just under the crossbar. After combining for a dozen goals in the first half, the only goal of the third quarter was Rangers second of the night at 6:29, which cut Colorados lead to 7-6. Two more goals were waved off after video review. Grants breakaway goal at 12:06 was taken away when video showed he stepped into the crease before his shot crossed the goal-line. Two minutes later, Shattler thought he had tied it before video confirmed that he also was in the goal crease when he let his shot go. Colorado led 6-1 early in the second quarter when Calgary clawed its way back into the game on unanswered goals from Dickson, Ranger, and Conway, all within a 2:45 span. Conways top corner goal at 7:18, coming against his former team, was followed by an emphatic celebration that fired up the already noisy Scotiabank Saddledome crowd of 9,346. Shewchuks second goal of the night at 9:33 temporarily hushed the home fans, but Shattler got the Roughnecks back to within two goals at half-time at 12:22. The NLL debut of 25-year-old Colorado rookie Jason Jones lasted less than 30 minutes. He was given a major penalty for spearing and a game misconduct late with just over a minute left in the second quarter after getting his stick up under the mask of Roughnecks captain Andrew McBride. Calgary, which struggled all night on the power play, were unable to capitalize on the five-minute man advantage. Opportunistic scoring, costly Calgary mistakes and superb goaltending by Levis added up to a 4-0 lead for the Mammoth at one point in the first quarter, despite the Roughnecks holding a significant edge in territorial play. The games opening goal by Gajic at 4:15 came when he stepped out of the penalty box and received a breakaway pass from Steve Toll. Less than two minutes later, Calgary pulled its goalie to get an extra player on the floor during a stretch of pressure in the Colorado end. However, the unusual tactic backfired when Colorado gained possession after a shot off the crossbar and quickly transitioned up the floor with Gallant scoring into the empty net. Shewchuk scored on a short-handed breakaway at 7:40 and McLellan added a power-play goal at 14:35 before Calgary got a key goal with 1.2 seconds remaining from Dobbie. Calgary held a 18-10 edge in shots on goal during the first quarter. Notes: Calgarys Devan Wray (flu) was unable to make his season debut. Wray was re-signed on Thursday from Edmontons practice roster. All seven of Wrays NLL seasons have been spent with the Roughnecks. . .
