This timeless Greek tragedy tells the story of a young girl struggling to follow her spiritual beliefs and duty to her family which oppose the laws of man.Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus. She disobeys the orders of Creon, her uncle and the king of Thebes, who has forbidden the burial of her brother Polyneices, considered a traitor to the city. She dies for her efforts, leading to other deaths. Antigone is one of three plays written by Sophocles regarding the ill-fated family of Oedipus and involves such issues as loyalty to self and family versus the state in times of conflict. |
