Biography
Amilcare Ponchielli
Amilcare Ponchielli was an Italian composer of the late-Romantic era. He is most well-remembered for his verismo opera La Gioconda, particularly the famous 'Dance of the Hours' which features in Disney's Fantasia.
Ponchielli got his musical education at the Milan Conservatory, before taking several small jobs to support his composing. His first big success was in 1872, with his opera I promessi sposi, and from there he established a relationship with the G. Ricordi & Co publishers.
He was married to soprano Teresina Brambilla, for whom he composed many of his lead roles, including the title role in La Gioconda.
