Lucas Hnath

Lucas Hnath is an American playwright. He won the 2016 Obie Award for Excellence in Playwriting for his plays The Christians and Red Speedo. He is a resident playwright at New Dramatists. He currently teaches at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, from which he graduated with his BFA in 2001 and his MFA in 2002.

Hnath's play The Christians was first produced at the Humana Festival of New American Plays at the Actors Theatre of Louisville in 2014. It premiered off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons on August 28, 2015. The play won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play, and was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the Lortel Award for Outstanding Play. In February 2016, Hnath's play Red Speedo premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop. It won the Obie for Playwriting.

Hnath's first play to appear on Broadway, A Doll's House, Part 2, premiered at the John Golden Theatre on April 1, 2017. The production was directed by Sam Gold and starred Laurie Metcalf, Chris Cooper, Jayne Houdyshell, and Condola Rashād. A Doll's House, Part 2 was nominated for eight Tony Awards that year, including Best Play. It was also nominated for the Outer Critics Circle for Outstanding New Broadway Play.

Hnath has been awarded the Windham–Campbell Literature Prize in Drama (2018), the Steinberg Playwright Award (2017), the Kesselring Prize for The Christians (2016), the Whiting Award (2015), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2015), two Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award Citations for Death Tax (2013), and the Whitfield Cook Award for Isaacs Eye (2012).
