
Director Responsibilities
Introduction
Any successful theatre production takes a team of talented, collaborative artists. Leading that team is the director, the person who takes charge and coordinates everyone’s skills and talents into a cohesive, unified show. But what does it take to be a director? What do they actually do? Before the first production meeting, a director has to understand the requirements to effectively lead the company to a successful performance. These initial requirements can be grouped into two categories: Experience & Skills and Show Selection.
Terminology
- Director: The person who is responsible for all aspects of a production, including the overall concept, coordinating the designers, working with actors, and creating the artistic impact.
- Budget: The money allowed for expenses in a theatrical production.
- Stage manager: The person responsible for maintaining the director's vision and the artistic integrity of the show during the rehearsal process and show run.
- Dramaturgy: The historical and literary study of the composition and production of plays.

Most theatre directors begin their careers in other areas, as actors, designers, production crew, or stage managers.
