Context

Widely considered one of Handel’s best examples of opera seria, the brilliance of Ariodante is actually a result of the industry competition he was facing. After many years at the top of the game, and being able to engage all of the best singers of the time, Handel had been pushed aside by the new rising star company, Opera of the Nobility. Farinelli had already jumped ship, and in the 1734-35 season, so did Cuzzoni and Senesino. Handel’s time at the King’s Theatre was at an end, and he was forced to make way for the incoming company.
