The Vagina Monologues

Writers: Eve Ensler

Context

Eve Ensler began The Vagina Monologues with casual conversations with her friends about their vaginas. She wanted to understand why there was such a stigma around the word ‘vagina’ and why women were uncomfortable discussing their relationship to their own vaginas. A few talks with friends turned into over 200 interviews with women that ranged in content from sex, to relationships, to violence against women and more. Eve Ensler premiered The Vagina Monologues as a One-Woman Show in 1996 at the HERE Arts Center in New York and it was so successful that it moved Off-Broadway to the Westside
